Metallica's lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, was listed as number 11 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. While playing with Metallica, Hammett contributed to many songs that were huge hits, developed some killer riffs and earned himself and his band seven Grammy awards. Metallica is considered one of the best-known heavy metal bands and has produced many hugely popular albums, including its self titled album that sold 15 million copies. Four of Metallica's albums reached number one on the Billboard 200 and their combined record sales for all the albums are somewhere around 95 million. If you are a guitar player and would love to replicate Kirk Hammett's rock star success, take some tips from the man himself.

Hammett possesses a true love for playing the guitar and for music in general. This might explain why he claims to play his guitar 361 days out of the year. If you are looking for guitar tips from Hammett, the first one is to practice obsessively. Hammett started playing the guitar when he was 15 with an unimpressive guitar that he got from a Montgomery Ward catalogue. He decided he needed an amp to go with his guitar so he made one out of a shoebox and a four-inch speaker. Eventually, he got a job as a dishwasher at Burger King to finance his musical inclination. It wasn't too long before Hammett was able to upgrade to a Fender Stratocaster, and then moved on to his favorite of all time, a 1974 Gibson flying V. Another hint from Hammett is that you don't have to be in possession of the best equipment available. You just have to start somewhere and work with what you have until you get better and can upgrade. Hammett definitely didn't start out with the fanciest music gear, but his love of music and playing the guitar kept him going.

Hammett is a man who is constantly curious and interested in learning new things. He is quoted as saying "a life lived unexplored is a life not worth living." This character trait played out well for him on a few levels in his guitar career. His curiosity kept him experimenting with different techniques on his guitar in a quest to develop something truly unique. This brought about the "Frankenstein" technique that Hammett invented by using different pick-up and amp combinations. After Hammett joined Metallica, his desire to learn and explore gave him the motivation to join the ranks of some other guitar greats and take guitar lessons from Joe Satriani. This was a great move for his career because it bettered his skills as a well-rounded musician when he learned to play jazz, classical and blues from Satriani.

Lastly, Kirk Hammett is a humble guy. One night at 3:15 in the morning when he was touring with Metallica and staying in a hotel room, he composed the famous riff that is included in Metallica's most popular single "Enter Sandman". "Enter Sandman" was the first single from Metallica's self-titled album, which sold 15 million copies. Hammett could have considered himself a big time, accomplished musician at this point and stopped trying to improve his craft. However, even after Metallica's huge success, Hammet had the humility to admit that there was plenty more that he could learn about guitars. He enrolled in guitar classes at the local city college in San Francisco to continue improving his skills and working on his craft.

Overall, Kirk Hammett is a passionate guitar player who is consistent with his practice and devoted to learning and improving his skills. He remains humble even after the great success of his band and his music. These traits combine to make Kirk Hammett one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

So if a PS3 40GB is only $399 and a Rockband package is $170... by my calculations that comes to $569 plus tax. Why would anyone pay $649 for this? Aren't bundles supposed to save you money, not cost you more...?

Why would anyone buy this bundle?? These two items retail for $600, don't spend over $800 to get them together. The only reason this even got one star is because it wouldn't let me leave it at none.

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better 20/20 gets. This CD simply put is one of Spyro Gyra's best to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The nice thing about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Smooth Jazz isn't your favorite style you still can't help but appreciate the greatness of the group.

Overall 20/20 is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Smooth Jazz collection. Truly an outstanding Smooth Jazz CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are The Unwritten Letter [track 1], Three Sisters [track 4], and Rockaway To Sunset [track 10].

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 5, Sweet Baby James. What a nice track!

Just as there are highly talented musical acts that never make the big time, there are musical acts that make the big time, only to never go anywhere. Some of these acts make the big time and make a fool of themselves, while others make the big time, make an impact, and make a quick getaway. Some are lucky enough to have at least one hit, while others are stuck with a few mediocre hits that come back to haunt them decades later. Some are loved for a while, only to fall from grace quickly, and some just never gain acceptance. The following is our list of the top five busted musicians, bands and solo acts who sang the wrong tune.

Milli Vanilli: Ah, Milli Vanilli. Just like our parents remember where they were when Elvis died, those of us who were children of the 1980s remember where we were when Milli Vanillis secret came out. The singers that brought us Girl You Know Its True, Milli Vanilli won a Grammy in 1990 for Best New Artist. This, however, was short lived after it was revealed that their talent had less to do with music, and more to do with lip singing. Still, those of us who were true fans didnt blame it on the duo; we blamed it on the rain.

Ashley Simpson: While performing on Saturday Night Live in fall of 2004, Ashley Simpson was caught pulling a Milli Vanilli when it was revealed she wasnt actually singing. This was followed by an ill-received performance at the Orange Bowl and a slug of condemnation. Still, Ashley Simpson has two huge things working for her: shes released two number one albums and shes young enough to bounce back from any criticism accrued. Plus, she can benefit from having her manager, who also happens to be her father, on her side. He seems just a tad crazy.

O-Town: A group that came together through the reality series, Making of the Band, O -Town got on the literal band wagon just a bit too late. As the boy band fad started to fade into the night, O-Town found that they were unable to gain substantial success. The group was together for only a short time and though they did release two albums, O-Town disappeared from the scene as quickly as they came into it. This is, however, old potatoes: the manager of the group, Lou Pearlman, apparently has more pressing worries on his mind.

Eddie Murphy: We love his stand up, we love his movies, we even love when he lends his voice to an animated donkey. We just dont love his music. Though he can actually hold a note quite well, the songs Eddie Murphy released have to be tunes that even he looks back on and sayswha??? Still, Eddie did have two hits with Put Your Mouth on Me and Party all the Time. The latter song was voted, in 2004, as number eight on the list of 50 Worst Songs of All Time by Blender magazine.

Gerardo: After playing the part of Ricky in the film, Cant Buy me Love, Gerardo Mejia became a singersort of. He was known more for his sexy appearance, his six packed abs, and his dance talent than he was for his booming voice. Still, he reached the top of the charts with his hit Rico Suave, a hit that admit it you know youve sang along with. One of the first performers to merge Latin and English, Gerardo occasionally calls himself the Latin Frank Sinatra. Uh.right.

History
There were other solid body electric guitars before the Fender Telecaster guitar. But the Tele, as it sometimes known, was invented in 1940s by Leo Fender and others in California. Leo later created the successful Stratocaster guitar. The body of the Telecaster is a solid one piece design.

Body
The Telecaster is a single cutaway guitar. A cutaway is an indentation or scallop in the guitar body, where the neck joins the body. Since the Telecaster is a single cutaway, it has only one cutaway below the neck where it meets the body. This cutaway provides room for the guitar player's hand to occupy when playing notes "high" on the neck.

Neck
The Telecaster had a one piece maple neck, one of Fender's many innovative design and manufacturing techniques. Today the Tele is available in maple and rosewood fretboard models.

Pickups
Originally Fender sold a single pickup guitar called the Esquire. A short time later a two pickup version of the guitar was named the Broadcaster. However, the Gretsch company objected due to their line of Broadkaster drums and Fender renamed his guitar The Telecaster. The Telecaster has two single coil pickups, as opposed to the double coil "humbucking" pickups found on some other guitars such as those by Gibson. The pickup nearest the bridge is mounted in a slanted position. The Telecaster had a three position switch to select the pickups. Musicians and Fender have tried other pickup combinations on the Tele, including using double coil or "humbucking" pickups.

Bridge
The bridge has three adjustable saddles carrying two strings each. For many years the Tele was available with a large chrome cover, Fender seems to have omitted this on many models recently. A popular add-on for the Telecaster is called the B-bender. This attachment allowed a smooth bend of the pitch of the B string, simulating the sound of a steel guitar. This was, of course, popular with country musicians.

Company History
Fender had a troubled history after CBS bought it 1965. However, Fender management bought out the company in 1985 and restored the company's prestige and reputation as a manufacturer of quality musical instruments.

Future
Today there are numerous models of American Standard Telecasters available from Fender in various price ranges. Its popularity and Fender's renovation guarantee a successful future for the Telecaster.

I can describe the latest release from Heavy Metal super group Alice In Chains for you with just one word Outstanding!

I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Dirt. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Dirt is a pleasantly varied, mix of 13 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall Dirt is excellent from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Heavy Metal fan. Really spectacular from beginning to end.

While the entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Dam That River, track 4 - Down In A Hole, and track 13 - Would?.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Them Bones. Great track!

Collecting guitars for so many people is not just a hobby, but a passion. Most of the greatest guitar collectors know how much the hobby has changed over the past 10 years or so, but it is still possible to begin a "career" in guitar collecting if that is what you choose to do. Although you can no longer walk into any pawn shop in Hollywood and buy a Les Paul or Stratocaster for less than $100, it is still possible to find a good deal on a vintage guitar.

The think you have to realize is that you are going to find the best deals on a vintage guitar if you buy only American guitars. It isn't to say that other countries such as Japan do not make a great guitar, but the vintage market is best for American made guitars. You will then be able to buy a guitar that will increase in value over the years. Also, the reputation of the American made guitars, especially the older ones, is increasing. It used to be that people looked down on the 1970's Stratocasters but now you can find them sold on auction sites for thousands of dollars. It is the same thing with 1980's Gibson guitars which were once thought of as poor quality replicas.

This is simply because of buyer's demand. After all of the "desirable" guitars have all been bought up, the collectors go to whatever is left that will command attention. So that is why if you want to find a real deal on vintage guitars that will increase in value you should buy guitars that collectors are currently not paying much attention to. That way, by the time they get around to these guitars, they will be worth a great deal of money. For example, you may not want to go with Fender Mustangs or Gibson Melody Makers which are already desirable. Instead you should go with student models that haven't been noticed yet.

An example of this would be the Fender Bullet. It is still popular in brand name but it is considered to be a student model guitar. You can still find great deals on the ones that were made in the early 1980's but they are garnering attention now which will make them hugely popular in a few years. Fender also put out other great American made student models such as the Lead I, II and III which you can still buy for less than $300.

Gibson is also another collectible brand. Granted the Melody Makers are already expensive but the Kalamazoo line hasn't been tapped out yet. Similar to the Melody Makers you can find them for less than $100 and have a great guitar in which to invest in for later on. In general if you stick with Gibson and Fender and watch out for the less talked about student models you are already finding deals that will appreciate in value over the years. But more so you are finding quality made guitars that are great to look at, wonderful to play sometimes and have a nice background to them.

Many guitar enthusiasts visiting my website are interested in learning more about guitar chords. So, I thought this would be a good subject for me to give you some pointers on...

There are literally hundreds of guitar chords, plus, the fretboard enables one to use several different fingering combinations to play them. Memorizing every chord can seem like a daunting task for the beginning as well as the more "seasoned" guitarist.

But don't fret! I've put together some tips that will help speed up your chord learning curve!

First of all, it's important to keep things simple when you are just starting to learn how to play guitar. Try to get a good understanding of the basic "open" chords used in and around first position (by "open chords I'm referring to chords that contain a lot of open strings vs. bar chords, etc.)

• Begin with the Major, Minor and Dominant 7th chords in the common keys of: C G D A and E.
• Memorize them all!
• Practice using them in chord progressions and songs.

These basic chord shapes will help you learn how to play other chords up and down the neck. Let me explain...

Chords are made from triads. This simply means that there are 3 tones taken from a given scale to create a chord. So, when you are playing a basic triad guitar chord you are only using 3 notes, or tones, even though you may be strumming all 6 strings. The cool thing is, triads are moveable chord shapes. So wherever you place them on the neck of the guitar, you have a chord.

EXAMPLE:

The 3 tones of the A Major chord are: A C# E

If you take the A Major (triad) chord and move the whole shape up 1/2 step on the neck, you will have an A# chord. If you move another 1/2 step higher, you will have a B Major (triad) chord. If you move down 1/2 from B Major you will have Bb (A# & Bb are on the same fret).

Be careful only to strum the fretted notes of the chord. Do not to play the open strings if the tones are not in the chord. If you want to add another string it must be one of the notes in the triad- open or fretted.

This same phenomenon occurs when using the E Major triad chord shape.

The 3 tones of E Major are: E B G#

As with A Major chord, this triad can be moved up and down the neck. Again, be sure not to play any open notes when you move up the neck unless it's in the triad. Remember, if you wish to add more strings, you must use one of the notes in the triad.

This is also a moveable chord shape. The name of the chord is found in the 4th and the first string.

Whenever you use either of these shapes to play a chord anywhere on the neck, you will have a Major chord. Now you can play a wide variety of natural, sharp or flat chords in any key! Remember what I said- knowledge is power!
