We all know what improvisational comedy is, but have you heard of improv music? Imagine music being played in the moment, coming directly from the heart of each musician and flowing back and forth between the players and the audience. They say that in improv comedy the truth often comes out from the player and this is also correct for improv music.

There is no plan with improv music, no set of notes or chords to follow. The music evolves as is it being played and is an end result of the musicians creating it. The instrumentation can be varied, it can be as simple as a solo pianist or as all encompassing as a full orchestra, although it is more difficult to create good improv with many players. For anyone who has ever been to a drum circle on the beach with 30 or so drummers, you know what I mean. And those guys don't even need to worry about melody.

The best improv music is usually created by a small hand full of players. The most important aspect of good improv is that all the players listen to each other. Listening and often times watching each other will give them clues as to which way the music will go next. When each participant follows the flow of the music, the best results are created.

Improv music doesn't have to be only instrumental either, some singers have the ability to invent on the spot. This is true vocal improvisation. While other singers can improvise melody, but may have a cheat sheet or two of previously written lyrics nearby to help with the process.

The style of the improv will depend on the players in the group. Improv music can range from punk rockish or experimental to ethereal or something similar to a movie soundtrack. Some of the most common instruments used in modern improv are keyboards, guitars and drums. As there is no beginning or end, well at least none planned, these decisions are made moment by moment by the players. The best improvisers know when to drop out and when to jump in, no matter what instrument they are playing.

The most important aspect in creating a good improv atmosphere is to creatively explore the music in a low-risk situation. The quality of the musicianship is not as important as having a nurturing vibe for the playing room. Relaxing into the music, rather than worrying about the missed notes, will allow the musician to listen and learn. Even the most experienced musicians hit bad notes and it is possible for the greenest player to come up with brilliance.

Improv music isn't just for the musicians though, it also has benefit for the listener. Due to the nature of improvisation the music resulting is often of a mellow and free-flowing style. The creative power that flowed through the musicians who created it, also flows to the listener. This type of music provides wonderful backdrop to creative tasks the listener might want to accomplish, especially if the music is instrumental and allows the listener to drift into the creative groove without the need to comprehend words.

The benefits of music therapy have long been known to therapists the world around. Improvisational music imbibes all the creative power that the musicians put into it and the listener enjoys this creative harvest. As modern music listeners we have all heard many styles of music and can usually figure out where something is going without much trouble. The music we enjoy most is an in-between mix, with some confirmation of expectations along with pleasant surprises, in a blend that is interesting rather than frustrating.

Good improv music can often be akin to a good mystery novel, it is difficult to predict and yet it fits together in a creatively logical way, so when we look back on what we heard we say "yes, of course." Improv can challenge our creativity and show us sides of ourselves we haven't seen before, while stimulating our inner muse.

Listening to improvised music as a background soundtrack while we perform other tasks, be they artistic or not, can often increase our creative powers. The same way improvisation for the theater builds creativity for the players and the audience, so does musical improv. Whether the person is actively involved or merely a listener, the benefit comes through. As we involve ourselves as listeners, the creative vibe originally created by the musicians now flows through us.

There is no plan in improv music and therein lies the beauty. Some things in life can be experienced much more easily than explained. This is the case for improvisational music. The truth in improvisational music is that the creative spirit needed to bring it into being is within each of its players and listeners alike.

Keith King is a fine artist, graphic designer and musician, but still manages to pay the rent on time. He has been making his way around the internet since the early 90s and only recommends the good stuff.

Developed as an amalgamation of various musical forms, country music has a huge fan following across the globe. Country music enthusiasts are divided loosely into two sects. The first contains those people who listen to this melodious form for entertainment. The second and the more serious are those who follow country music as a form of art.

Country music lyrics have played a huge part in bringing the music to its present successful stage. The simple and flowing words of country music describe the day-to-day lives of the average American. Not every body identifies with Brad Pitt or Madonna, but you can empathize with the simple characters described in country music. An average working class American citizen relates to the beautiful depiction of relationships, touching loneliness or poverty.

Earlier commercial forms of country music copied ballad or folk music. The lyrics depicted the lives of Americans in earlier days, using a fiddler to deliver the message. A good example of this was fiddling John Carsons 1924 hit "Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane."

Country music lyrics beautifully portrayed the romantic version of a vast span of lonesome prairies. People loved the image of a singing cowboy galloping on a steed singing and working hard on a sunny day. Singers like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers boosted the image of country music tremendously by including beautiful lyrics in their songs.

The lyrics in country music are often repeated as a catchy melodious phrase by a chorus, and composers usually write tunes that are 150 words or less.

Country Music provides detailed information on Country Music, Country Music Lyrics, Country Music CDs, Country Music Videoes and more. Country Music is affiliated with Classical Music Downloads.

Learning to play guitar is a process, and there is no finish
line. How long does it take to play guitar, is a question
students often ask their teacher. How long it takes to play the
guitar depends on what your definition of guitar playing
is!

The last few decades has seen a remarkable growth in the
popularity of rock music and guitar playing has become pretty
attractive for many.

Today the guitar is everywhere; a versatile instrument - adapting
itself to almost any kind of situation, Victimized by it's own
success, it has become something more than a musical instrument -
like the swastika before it, it has become the symbol of a social
revolution! The ultimate emblem of grooviness! It is now an
object unto itself!

Guitar enthusiasts are so often blinded by the symbol that they
remain deaf to the world of musical wonders that lie beyond their
blinkered six-string field of interest.

Many teenagers exist who aspire to become rock superstars, but
there is also a section who wants to learn guitar playing just
for sake of it. But many of them end up losing hope of learning
guitar since they don't find the best way to learn guitar.

How long does it take to play guitar? If you can answer the
following questions and make these important distinctions you
will have a good idea.

QUESTION ONE: How do you view the instrument?

Do you want to be (a) guitar owner, (b) guitar player, (c) a
musician who uses the guitar for musical expression?

Essentially there's three levels of involvement with the guitar:

1. Guitar owners - to qualify you need only to have enough funds
to purchase the instrument, for these people the guitar is simply
a toy, like a computer game, or fashion accessory. How long does
it take you to play the guitar if you're in this category? About
5-10 minutes max. The important thing here is to "be seen to be
playing the guitar"!

2. Guitar players - players in this category are often very
dedicated and speed many hours practicing their instrument.
Mostly self taught, they learn almost exclusively from guitar
tab, and their friends. How long does it take to play guitar in
this category?... these players understand it's a lifetime
journey.

3. Musicians who play guitar as their chosen instrument- players
in category two focus on guitar playing skills, whereas
level three players understand the whole scope of the musical
landscape. A good musician not only plays their instrument well,
they understand and can intelligently discuss all music.

These players:

(a) listen to all types of music

(b) read about all types of music

(c) study all types of music

How long does it take to play guitar in this category? Again,
it's a lifetime of hard work and discipline. What's the
difference between category two and category three?

Level two players must have their instrument in their hands to
communicate ideas, whereas, musicians who play guitar as their
chosen instrument know and can discuss, the qualities which make
Herb Ellis or Barney Kessel a great jazz player; why Duke
Ellington is a jazz innovator; Michel Legrand a great composer
and orchestrator. They know why good symphonies are good and bad
symphonies are bad; they know why good pop or country songs are
good (musically) and bad songs are bad.

QUESTION TWO: Are you internally motivated or externally
motivated?

Externally motivated players usually give up playing the guitar
once they realize that they are responsible for their progress.
these players quickly move on to the new 'hip' fad (only to give
up on that as soon as things get a bit challenging).

An obvious example of this type of externally motivated player
and their associated problems and disappointments is with the
recent popularity of computer games where people pretend to play
the guitar.

Despite PR claims from computer games companies
that their computer guitar games improve the player's rhythm
and hand dexterity, professional guitar teachers worldwide have reported
that guitar computer game veterans have been disappointed when
confronted with the real-world requirements of hard work and
delayed gratification. They expect to jump into it and learn it
as quickly as they learned the game, and they realize that they
can't.

I'll assume if you have read this far you're more interested in
category two or three!

needless to say that only internally motivated players make it
into category two and three.

QUESTION THREE: What is the source of your information? common
knowledge or specialized knowledge?

Today it is not a question of information on any particular
subject, after all we live in the information age, don't we? To
accelerate your progress on the guitar and rapidly decrease the
time it takes you to play the guitar, what we need is specialized
knowledge to help us assemble the relevant knowledge to achieve
our goals.

The first thing to understand is that learning guitar is
something that takes a long time. how long it takes to learn
depends on what you want to learn.

Learning guitar is hard work but it's really important to have
fun and have your guitar make cool sounds while you're learning
all the hard bits. The main thing you have to consider when
learning how to play guitar is who is teaching you how to play
guitar.

How long does it take to play guitar? It depends on what you want
to achieve.

Learning isn't fun, I mean to most people learning is just boring - no one wants to do it.

Even more so when it comes to a musical instrument. You have things such as scales and monotonous exercises and you never seem to actually get to learning songs. Most people will not go near a piano -even though they love it, out of fear that they will not know how to play it. And the majority of the time their fear is justified.

If you are looking at getting started the typical scenario is that you walk into your teachers studio and she brings out a book of music for you to learn. And if you are luck she might teach you chord based piano - but that is highly unlikely.

This is because most music teachers think that you have to learn how to read sheet music before you are able to play. This is absolute rubbish.

Music and songs are made up of chords and progressions and this should be taught first because to learn something properly you have to understand the language of the music. Understand the chords and the music will flow from there.

Just learning to read music limits your ability to music that has already been created, by learning the chords and structures you are able to create music on demand - making up quality tunes on the spot, great for showing off to friends and families, or even just for your own entertainment.

So you’ve decided to take up the guitar. Excellent! You’re about to undertake a journey that will change your life forever. Really. The two most important decisions you make next will be selecting an instrument and selecting an instructor. This article deals with the former.

The $1,000,000 Question – Electric or Acoustic This choice is largely determined by the type of music you want to play. Some genres, like blues and certain popular styles, are well suited to either instrument. But others are fairly specific to either electric or acoustic. Traditional folk, for example would dictate an acoustic guitar while most jazz and rock styles would warrant an electric. And if you’re interest is in classical playing, the choice is clearly an acoustic with nylon strings. So the first step in choosing a guitar is identifying the type of music that you’re most interested in playing. Then listen to a few players that you like and see if they’re playing electric or acoustic instruments.

Full Size or Student If you are younger than 10-years old or have exceptionally small hands, consider getting a smaller than standard instrument. It will make learning easier and you’ll be more inclined to practice if you aren’t struggling with the instrument every time you pick it up. All of the major guitar makers produce student or travel-sized guitars so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one.

New or Used Your money will go a lot farther on a used instrument than on one that’s new. If you can find a well-maintained used guitar that fits your needs, you should consider it seriously. But be sure that it is in good shape and is what it’s purported to be. Some unscrupulous individuals sell counterfeit versions of name-brand guitars at ridiculously low prices on the used market. Be wary of any deal that seems too good o be true and consider taking any used guitar to a pro for an inspection before laying down your cash.

How Much to Spend The low-end guitar market has made great leaps in quality over the past 15 years. There are reasonably well-built instruments, both electric and acoustic, available for under $150 new. But the cheapest isn’t always the best bargain. A beginner needs to have a guitar that stays in tune, plays fairly easily and is comfortable to use. When selecting your guitar, make sure that it meets those criteria.

In Conclusion Every instrument is different. The more you try out, the more you’ll know what you like and what you don’t. Ask your friends who already play what they like or dislike about their guitars. And listen to the advice of those who have been through the process. But in the end, you will be spending countless hours with it, so pick the instrument that appeals to you.

Every guitar player that has ever been born lives for the day when he/she can pick up a vintage guitar. Vintage guitars are available in all major manufacturers and brands. But it's not only musicians and guitar enthusiasts that are attracted to these masterpieces. Vintage guitars can also be viewed as an investment.

You're probably saying to yourself right now "How can a guitar be an investment?", "Is buying a vintage guitar really a good investment?" Allow me to enlighten you a little. To the untrained eye, a guitar is a guitar. Now we aren't talking about the walls of instruments you see at Guitar Center or Sam Ash. We are talking about those special few extraordinary guitars that just scream to be torn into.

Guitars are a great investment for a few reasons. First, they are beautiful and command a room where they are displayed. Second, vintage guitars don't depreciate or lose value with time. On the contrary, these babies appreciate and gain value as they age, especially if they are kept up nicely. Third, they have superior tonality and action when played due to the quality workmanship that went into their construction.

Undoubtedly, the most popular is the Les Paul by Gibson. This guitar carries the name of the man who invented the solid body electric guitar. In the 1960's, the Les Paul was just about THE choice of instrument. These are still made today, but the older ones were made of superior materials like mahogany and oak. Some even had gold frets and mother of pearl inlays on the fret board.

Fender also has a stranglehold on a couple of highly sought after guitars, especially the Stratocaster, the Telecaster and the Thunderbird. These were favorites among blues and rock players alike. Again, the ones everybody wants were made in the 1950's and 1960's.

Certainly among the reigning Kings of vintage guitars are those made by the CF Martin company. Martin emigrated here from Europe in the late 19th century and set up shop in New York. The craftsmanship he imparted is not only extraordinary. It is absolutely earth shattering. Martin pioneered the X-bracing system for acoustic guitars adding years to the longevity of the instruments he made. Many Martin's are still in use at nearly 100 years old!

Guild is another vintage guitar that is vastly overlooked these days. Guild was only in operation for about 25 years and was bought by Fender in the 1990's. Some of the older Guild guitars are extremely rare and sought after as they exhibited the same quality as the Martin instruments of the same time period.

Every one of these guitar manufacturers has made an exceptional line of guitars. Players like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark and Les Paul have chosen them time and time again as their guitar of choice.

When bought as an investment, the vintage ones hold the possibility of giving a fantastic ROI (return on investment).

To see a collection of vintage guitars that are available right now, get on over to Vintage Guitar Zone and see what you can get your fingers around for a great price.

The short answer is yes. Vintage guitars are getting harder and harder to come by. Many of the large chains simply do not carry a lot of vintage, unless you live in bigger cities, and I do not. Even in large cities like Miami, NYC, L.A, etc, there are people waiting to snatch your vintage Fender guitar away from you. So, what to do?

eBay is the answer! Yes, it's true.

You can trust people on here, just look at their score on eBay and if it were in the 98%-99%, I'd say you were good to go. That's what I trust anyway. Then you can click on their username and find out what items they have sold previously.

This way, if they say they are selling vintage fender guitars or Fender custom shop guitars, you can see if this is true.

The Selection Just Can't Be Beat

Many stores only offer a handful of truly vintage Fender Strats. Not eBay. You'll find Strat makes and models, even Fender Custom Shops, relics and Masterbuilt Stratocasters. Not bad huh? If you love Vintage Fender guitars but can't afford one right now, check out the Fender Relics or Custom Shop guitars. PLUS, the Masterbuilt ones are incredible, right down to the original specks of that '57 Fender Stratocaster you've been eying.

Oh, and another tip: You don't want to buy a Vintage Fender Strat or Vintage Fender Telecaster from a guy selling comic books, right? So pay attention to their quality score next to their name on the top right and click their user name to see what else they have sold. Good luck finding YOUR perfect guitar!

In the current world of investing for the future, one sure way to beat inflation and devaluation of the bond market is to put your money in vintage electric guitars. The demand for original flying v or Paul McCartney left handed guitars continues to rise in spite of recessions.

Especially in demand are vintage Gibson hollow-body, Fender's vintage sunburst Stratocaster and vintage Fender guitar amplifiers. Nostalgia for early rock is only one reason for the high valuation of vintage guitars and accompanying guitar equipment. The main reason demand is so high for vintage guitars is the sound they produce is as unique as the instrument itself.

Decades ago, when vintage guitars were new, the technology to produce them was in its early stages and many of the electric pick-ups had to be hand-wound or if they were machine made, each was just a little different. A few less strands of wire in the pick-ups caused a little different sound. The bodies were not completely uniform either, making the sound-box on each just a little different from the next guitar being made. As a result, each guitar was just a little unique. Additionally, over time, the electronics degraded a little causing even more difference and variation from instrument to instrument.

Original Fender guitar amplifiers were made with tubes and not with current "solid-state" circuitry. Tubed amps, like Fender and Epiphone vintage amplifiers had unique sounds which cannot be made with the cleaner Marshall or Yamaha solid-state amplifiers on the market today. Those with good ears can tell a guitarist playing vintage guitars and on vintage amplifiers.

When buying a vintage guitar or vintage amplifier, look for low Fender serial numbers on the back of the body. Review serial number ranges from web-sites of Fender, Epiphone, Gibson, Jackson, and Yamaha to find when the vintage guitar you are considering was made. Knowing as much about your investment will assure its continued increase in value.
Vintage Guitars as an Investment

One sure way to beat inflation and present devaluation of the bond market to invest for the future is to put your money in vintage electric guitars. Paul McCartney left handed guitars and original flying v guitars will have demand in spite of recessions.

Vintage Gibson hollow-body, Fender's vintage sunburst Stratocaster and vintage Fender guitar amplifiers are especially in demand. The high valuation of vintage guitars and accompanying guitar equipment is not just driven by nostalgia for early rock. The unique sound produced by vintage guitars is the main reason demand is so high for older guitars.

Each guitar was just a little bit different when these vintage guitars were made decades ago and the technology to produce them was in its early stages. Many of the electric pick-ups were hand-wound, or if they were machine-made, just a little different from the next. If the pick-ups had a few less strands of wire, the sound would be just a little different. Sound boxes as part of the bodies were not made exactly uniform either, making the guitars sound just a little different from same product lines making each guitar just a little unique. Finally, the electronics degraded over time causing each instrument to be a little different from the next.

Marshall and Yamaha solid-state amplifiers on the market today are cleaner, unlike original Fender guitar amplifiers which were made with tubes. Fender and Epiphone tubed vintage amplifiers had tonal qualities that are prized because they are not "clean", but sound unique. Guitarists playing vintage guitars and vintage amplifiers can be identified by those with good ears.

Look for low Fender serial numbers on the back of the body when buying a vintage guitar or vintage amplifier. Web-sites of Fender, Epiphone, Gibson, Jackson Guitars and Yamaha vintage guitars will guide you to when a specific vintage serial number occurred which will help you in your purchase as to when it was made and possibly for whom. In order to be sure your investment will continue to increase in value, know as much as possible before making the decision to buy a vintage electric guitar.

In these uncertain times invest and have a ton of fun to boot. Vintage Gibson guitars are an excellent way to beat that hedge. Not only is it profitable but also fun to own commemorative and rare electric guitars.

Customer Review: Will make you a Strat fan for life
If you are a fan of just about any kind of music, you've heard a Fender Strat. This book covers all the details of one of the music world's most iconic images, the Fender Stratocaster. This is another book that I can't seem to put down. This book will make you want to run out and buy a Strat even if you can't play. I am just really learning the guitar after first picking one up over twenty-eight years ago. Buying this book really helped my decision to buy my first Strat, and it probably won't be my last. This is a must-have book if you are a collector, musician, or a fan of Strat-playing musicians.
Customer Review: Great book. Great fun!
This is a very well researched and well written book. All of Tom Wheeler's guitar and amp books are terrific. I also have the companion Fender Amp book which is a "must have" for enthusiasts and collectors.

Named after their hometown, the soft rock outfit, Boston has a loyal core of fans. Boston the band was in its prime during the 1970s and 1980s but they have never really gone away. They are a particular favorite with radio DJs and their appeal cuts across the generations. The most famous song associated with them is probably More Than a Feeling.

As with most groups that have been around for a long time, there have been several changes to the line up. The only remaining original member is Tom Scholz and he founded the band Boston, plays on guitar and writes most of the music. Current members also include Gary Pihl on guitar, Jeff Neal on drums and Kimberley Dahme on bass. Dahme is the first female member of the line up. Scholz is also well known for his innovation in the recording studio and has designed his own recording and sound equipment. He is a perfectionist in the studio and strive to reproduce the best sound possible on stage.

The group has a habit of making platinum albums, including the debut from 1976. Called Boston, the album sold more copies than any other debuts in American history. The follow up, two years later, Don't Look Back, also reached platinum sales, as did the next two. Third Stage was released in 1986 and Walk On in 1994. A Greatest Hits release was another bestseller in 1997. In addition to the old hits, it contained three new songs. The latest album from Boston the band is Corporate America, which came out in 2002.

The single, More Than a Feeling, from the debut album, reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was promoted with a video of the group in concert. The song has been covered several times including a version by boy band *NSYNC. "Weird Al'' Yankovic has also done a parody of the song. It is featured on the PlayStation game, Guitar Hero.

There was a very emotional reunion for Boston the band in 2007 when Tom Scholz organized a tribute concert to former vocalist with the group, the late Brad Delp. Both current and past members of the band came together to celebrate Delp's life, playing their classic hit records. The concert, at Boston's Bank of America Pavilion, was a great success. Despite the circumstances, it was an uplifting affair for the band and their fans as they remembered the vast contribution that Delp had made to the band's success.
